#2059 ... FIRE!

Homes were evacuated and trains on nearby lines stopped after the blaze at a home in Barnard St, Wadestown, which began about 3pm yesterday (Wednesday). At least 14 appliances, with a total of more than 50 firefighters manning them, along with a helicopter with a monsoon bucket, tackled the blaze after it spread to scrub in the nearby town belt. Fire communications shift manager David Meikle says the fire was under control by 7pm. Four Fire Service teams and four rural firefighting teams from Wellington City Council were still dampening down hotspots and were likely to be there most of the night, Mr Meikle said. Strong winds, which were predicted to get up to 120km/h, were hindering firefighters. There were no reports of injuries.
