This may seem non-descript and not very awe inspiring ... however probably most of the student population in Wellington since at least the early 60s has partyed at this watering hole ... and it is still a hot spot today
This is Wellys funky and contemporary heritage bar! With history stretching back to before colour photo’s the Cross has been Te Aro’s meeting place and watering hole for hundreds of years! The new interior is so intriguing and homely it drove us to the finals for ‘Best renovated bar’ in ’06.
Everyone fits. All the different spaces and daily local happenings have sussed the place with an exciting and down to earth atmosphere. And ambiance with more character than a flying sheep.
The backyard’s cool. Taking out ‘best garden bar’ in The Capital Times in ’06 and ’07 it’s a bit flash but without the fireplace, comfy seats, hot water bottles and blankets it wouldn’t be the cosiest backyard for the winter that it is!

Well, you've convinced me. And if I'm ever in the vicinity, I shall stop in for some liquid refreshment!
interesting
i lived pretty much a sheltered life in a greek immigrant household and although i was a VUW student for 6 years (i got a masters in linguistics), i never went here.
one day, i think i'll come back to nz and try to fill in the gaps in my upbringing...
We discovered this place while our daughter was studying abroad at Massey last year. The food is fabulous! I had never cooked my food on a hot lava stone before. We have a restaurant here in Rochester, MN, USA that has added hot stone cooking at the table.
Love this blog! I can't wait to visit Wellington again.
