The sky over Civic Square might seem unusually featureless to Wellingtonians.
That's because the silver fern globe that dangles over the square has been removed for inspection after it suffered mystery damage during the week.
The landmark sculpture, Ferns, was carefully plucked from the skies by workers perched on a crane over a period of about three hours on Sunday.
Wellington City Council workers had noticed on Wednesday night Ferns' aluminium metal-work was showing signs of "fatigue,"
"The top of the sphere has sort of concaved in a little bit, which means there's some structural damage."
